Truth and Reconciliation

Reconciliation means different things to various people, but all Canadians must acknowledge the truth about the destructive acts of colonialism before reconciliation is possible. Members of our team have individually embarked on journeys to seek the truth through informal and formal opportunities. Informal opportunities have included attending and learning from Indigenous-led experiences, such as art installations that explore colonialism from a First Nations perspective. TDV team members have completed courses and formal professional development, such as the University of Alberta’s MOOC Indigenous Canada or the CES e-Institute course Truth and Reconciliation for Evaluators.

As part of our reconciliation journey, we all commit to the following principles of practice:

  • We will always strive to actively respond to the 15 Calls to Action in the Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada that directly involve evaluation practice.
  • We continuously strive for cultural humility and cultural responsivity in our relationships and practices.
  • We seek opportunities to deepen our knowledge of the unique histories, cultures, and experiences of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples.
  • We respect data sovereignty and self-determination with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit information and abide by the principles of OCAP and Ethical Métis Research.
  • We will ground our work in the principle of reciprocity and recognize the distinctions-based authority of First Nation, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada.
